Starter set per scrivere giochi non sessisti

Do you want to write a choose-your-own-adventure book where the protagonist could be of any gender? Do you need to translate a role-playing game and one of the characters is non-binary?

This workshop will provide you with the basic linguistic tools to write games in a gender-sensitive way.

NB: you won’t be told how you ‘must’ write the games. The aim is to provide you with additional tools to describe any gender-related situation you might encounter, using examples based on real-life experiences.

The workshop will be structured as follows:

a) Introduction to morphological gender in Italian, with an overview of word classes (epicene words, common-gender nouns, etc.);

b) Feminine forms of occupational titles;

c) Linguistic strategies for avoiding gender specification;

Each point will be introduced and developed using concrete examples that the lecturer has encountered in her work as a language editor for role-playing and board games, encouraging workshop participants to propose their own solutions and discussing them together.

At the end of the workshop, participants will be given a starter set, i.e. a short booklet summarising the concepts covered in the session.

The lecturer is Gloria Comandini, a linguist specialising in the study of hate speech, gender-fair language and journalistic communication. She teaches the workshop ‘How to avoid sexism in the Italian language’ at the University of Milan and coordinates the interdisciplinary workshop GSI:detect – Detecting Gender Stereotypes in Italian for EVALITA 2026. She has worked as a language editor for board games and role-playing games, including Dialect (Narrattiva), Fall of Love and When colours fade (GateOnGames) and Harvest (MS Edizioni).
