Thirty years ago, Lara Croft stepped into the digital dungeons and the collective imagination, and she’s never left. She has become an icon, has had a huge impact on pop culture and has evolved considerably, from the early games to the reboots, oscillating between sexualisation, heroism and fragility. Then there is her method, with the logic of puzzles, observation and reconstruction: how much of it is real and how much belongs to the tradition of the nineteenth-century explorer, who traverses exotic locations and treats others’ objects as spoils? And to what extent can her fictionalised portrayal of archaeology – alongside figures such as Indiana Jones or Nathan Drake – spark a genuine curiosity about the discipline?
